How many Germans spend money on gambling every month?

The British market and opinion research institute YouGov wanted to find out how much money Germans spend on average on games of chance such as sports betting or casino games. The result is surprising: more than one in four respondents from Germany stated that they spend money on gambling at least once a month. The majority of the respondents with an affinity for gambling were primarily interested in sports betting.

Only a few respondents spend considerable sums of money on gambling

According to YouGov, slightly more than one in four respondents (27%) said they spend money on games of chance such as sports betting or casino games at least once a month. However, only about every tenth “gambling fan” (11%) stated that they spend more than 25 euros per month on games of chance. The remaining 16% said they spend less than 25 euros per month on all types of gambling. It should be noted, however, that lotteries were completely excluded from the survey. Accordingly, only sports betting, casino games and other games of chance such as scratch cards count.

Every third “gambling friend” is interested in sports betting

Most survey participants from Germany stated, according to YouGov, that they were primarily interested in sports betting (35%). Football and tennis bets are particularly popular in this sector. Furthermore, the current survey showed that almost every tenth respondent (8%) takes part in instant win games at regular intervals. This includes above all scratch cards.

Furthermore, every twentieth respondent (5%) stated that they were primarily interested in classic slot machines. Another 4% of respondents also value poker and bingo. Just a few days ago we published a guide that answers the question of how to recognize and combat addiction to gambling.

However, the current YouGov survey shows that the majority of Germans do not invest any money at all in games of chance of any kind. In addition, there is a considerable proportion of “gambling fans” who only invest a maximum of 25 euros per month in sports betting, casino games and the like. There can be no question of problematic gaming behavior with these manageable stakes.

YouGov’s “Global Gambling Profiles” tool can be used to gain comprehensive insights into the individual business areas. The tool works with gaming-related questions that users answer and from which appropriate conclusions can be drawn. These include, for example, the questions “Have you ever played for money in a casino?” And “Do you think there is something like a lucky streak when you play?”

Conclusion

The British market research institute YouGov questioned the gambling behavior of Germans, among other things. As a result, it was found that around every fourth German survey participant participates in gambling regularly, i.e. at least once a month. While 11% of the “gamblers” spend more than 25 euros a month, the remaining 16% spend less than 25 euros. The survey also shows that a particularly large number of “gambling fans” are interested in sports betting (35%). Classic slot machines (5%) and poker or bingo (4%) are therefore significantly less popular with Germans.
